Administrators Academy – Supporting and Evaluating Developmentally Appropriate Practices (AA3021)

The B-3 Continuity Project is extremely excited to be partnering with the ISBE KIDS team to offer an Administrator's Academy in conjunction with the 2019 B-3 Continuity Conference. Content across the two days is designed for administrators of kindergarten and preschool programs. Participants will learn how a developmentally appropriate classroom using a play-based learning model is purposefully and intentionally planned by teachers to address standards. Explicit connections to Danielson domains will be addressed.

The academy will be held on June 12-13, 2019 at the Double Tree in Bloomington, IL. Conference details including lodging information can be found on the conference website. One of the academy’s goals is to provide incentive for administrators to attend and learn with their B-3 stakeholders. Participant’s valuable feedback will also be used to enhance provided content for future offerings of the academy.

This academy has been approved by the Illinois State Board of Education for 7 hours. There is no cost for the academy but administrators wishing to participate need to separately register for the credits, attend a 2 hour pre-conference session and sign-in to each of the administer specific breakout sessions. Additional conference sessions will enhance the content of the academy and supplement planning time with administrators team members for implementation strategies.

Learning objectives include:

• Participants will know what classroom practices define developmental appropriateness in the early childhood grade band.
• Participants will understand the need for developmentally appropriate practices in early childhood classrooms.
• Participants will understand the value of purposeful play as a developmentally appropriate means of instruction.
• Participants will know how to support and evaluate kindergarten teachers throughout the KIDS implementation process.

Academy Materials

• AA 3021 does not require participants to complete pre-workshop assignments or requirements.  We recommended and encourage participants to have some background knowledge from the two recommended books for this academy:
  • Developmentally Appropriate Practice: Focus on Kindergarten by Carol Copple and Sue Bredekamp
  • Purposeful Play: A Teacher's Guide to Igniting Deep and Joyful Learning Across the Day by Mraz, Porcelli, & Tyler
